Police seek urgent interdict against March and March in KwaZulu-Natal

The police minister and the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner say they have intelligence of a planned attempt to burn the Refugee Reception Centre in Durban. The movement's spokesperson calls the court application an effort to silence people before the local government elections.

The application asks the court to stop March and March protests, convoys and processions in the province. It also seeks to stop intimidation or incitement by the movement's members and leaders.

Court papers say the applicants received intelligence about a planned action against the centre in Che Guevara Road this week. The papers also cite concern about escalating violence after the recent death of a foreign national, and about retribution for that murder.

Brigadier Thamsanqa Gama made the founding affidavit for the applicants. He said: "This application concerns an immediate threat to life, to personal safety, and public order in and around Durban as well as within the province of KwaZulu-Natal".

Sandile Dube, the national spokesperson for March and March, called the application "orchestrated efforts by the government to silence the people's voices barely days before the local government elections".

Rothmann testified about two cars that the prosecution alleges were used in the double murder. Evidence from Cartrack, a car tracking company, is before the court. The trial resumes on Monday.

Forbes and Motsoane were shot dead outside the former Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Durban in February 2023.

Sifolo agreed that the listed documents can be led in public without being placed on display. He has not released other documents for open hearings. Those documents can be used to question witnesses in in-camera hearings.

The step follows a direction from the Commission to its evidence leaders. They had to check which documents Sifolo would testify on could be used in public. Some media houses had opposed a blanket in-camera hearing, and the Commission acted after that.

Four people face charges of extortion and money laundering. They include Oupa Sindane, who is known as Bafana. The case is to resume in April next year.

The allegations say the group demanded payments from a businessman linked to a road project. Sibanyoni says one payment was a local content fee. NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the order helps to deprive people of the proceeds and benefits of crime.

Appeal court rules cultural adoption guidelines unlawful

The Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by the Minister of Social Development and the Gauteng MEC for Social Development. Five judges condemned the department and its social workers for unlawful meddling in two adoptions and ordered the government parties to pay costs.

Read moreShow less

Justice Nambitha Dambuza wrote the judgment, which the court handed down on Tuesday. It upheld a 2022 finding by Johannesburg High Court judge Fiona Dippenaar that the guidelines were impermissible. The adoptions of two babies, called B and L, were finalised in May 2023 and August 2023.

Dambuza said the government parties kept arguing that the adoption proceedings must start afresh because the application documents did not comply. She said their lack of insight and persistence in seeking to have the children removed from their families was gravely unsettling.

The judge said there was "no conceivable reason why they should be wrenched from their families". The High Court had referred the social workers' conduct to the South African Council for Social Service Professions. Dambuza said it was necessary to draw that conduct to the attention of the professional body.

Centres were told to contact candidates who had not arrived and advise them of alternative centres. Education MEC Jaco Londt said candidates facing circumstances beyond their control may arrive up to an hour after the exam starts and still be admitted.

Two adult men were wounded in a shooting at the Palm taxi rank in Delft at about 7am. Delft SAPS opened two attempted murder cases and a case of discharging a firearm. Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said no arrest had been made and the investigation continues.

The City of Cape Town temporarily closed the Delft public transport interchange. Urban mobility MMC Rob Quintas said the violence had spread to Mfuleni and Gugulethu. He said the dispute between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association and the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations is rooted in longstanding disputes over routes and operating rights.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the City is giving full policing support to the SAPS. He said safety camera footage is available to help investigators.

CapeNature said the case shows the environmental risks of illegal wildlife trafficking. Spokesperson Luke Folb said escaped or deliberately released alien reptiles may form invasive populations. He said they can prey on indigenous species and compete for food and habitat.

Folb said the unlawful trade and keeping of reptiles can deplete wild populations. He also said it can bring diseases and parasites to indigenous wildlife.

Elections Hot

What you need to know

Voting in the 2026 Local Government Elections is under way at 23,696 stations, and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) reported a smooth start on 4 November. Stations opened at 7am and close at 9pm, and by 10am preliminary figures showed 3,523,691 voters had cast ballots.

There were problems: unused ballot papers were stolen from Mnyameni Secondary School near Durban, police opened a case, and the IEC relieved the station staff of duty. Some voters in Tshwane said they were turned away for wearing party shirts, but the IEC denied this and said only mayoral candidates' entourages were barred.

ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe told members not to query the results or discredit the IEC, while the IEC said false online claims show routine procedures as fraud.

Markets reacted, with the dollar hitting a one-month low and the rand firming to around R16.55, as analysts pointed to fears of gridlock in Washington.
