Cachalia starts process to appoint permanent Hawks head
Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia has started the process to appoint a permanent head of the Hawks, and KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is being considered. Separately, the National Prosecuting Authority froze assets of Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni.
The NPA's asset forfeiture unit obtained a preservation order against Sibanyoni and his co-accused in an extortion case. One co-accused is taxi fleet owner Oupa Sindane. The order freezes their assets.
Western Cape police said they will crack down on taxi violence in Cape Town. They said the killings will be met with the full force of the law.
In Spain, 68 people died in a high-speed rail collision. The country declared three days of mourning. Spain's transport minister said an error and inexplicable circumstances led to the crash.
