DA plans criminal case over Bronkhorstspruit water failure
The Bronkhorstspruit water plant ran without chlorination from September 24 to October 14, and more than 400 cases of gastrointestinal illness have been reported since early October. The City of Tshwane did not warn residents about the contaminated water.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it will open a criminal case against municipal officials. It says they failed to meet national standards for water quality warnings.
Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya acknowledged negligence. She said disciplinary processes are under way against the administrative officials responsible.
The Department of Water and Sanitation is working with the city on the situation. Many residents blame local government for negligence.
