Deputy minister Bloom urges Gauteng municipalities to modernise water systems
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Jack Bloom said the only way to end the water crisis in parts of Gauteng is for municipalities to modernise their infrastructure as soon as possible. He spoke at a workshop in Boksburg.
The workshop reviewed the draft Strategic Framework for Water and Sanitation Services. Bloom gave the opening remarks and then spoke on the department's plans. He said the department is looking at modernising water infrastructure, ring-fencing water revenue and introducing utility models.
Bloom said: "In cases where municipalities are not doing their jobs, we are separating that and ring-fencing the money, using the utility model for efficiency and modernisation."
He urged municipalities that fail to serve their communities properly to approach the department for help. Bloom said any municipality that does not meet its duty to provide clean, reliable water should visit the Water Partnerships Office in the department.
