Drug-resistant Klebsiella often gains iron-scavenging genes, not hypervirulence
A global study in Nature Communications reports that drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae repeatedly acquires plasmids that carry aerobactin. Aerobactin boosts the bacterium's ability to scavenge iron.
The authors find that this route is favoured over the bacterium becoming hypervirulent. They suggest it may help emerging strains spread in healthcare settings. The plasmids involved can pass between bacteria. The study is peer-reviewed. Only a short summary was available to us, so the sample size and methods are not known.
