Early trial finds universal flu vaccine candidate safe in adults
Researchers tested a whole-virus universal flu vaccine called BPL-1357 in healthy adults in a phase 1 trial. They report that the vaccine was safe and produced immune responses.
The trial was randomised, double-blinded and placebo-controlled. Volunteers received the vaccine either by injection into the muscle or through the nose. The results appear in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications. A phase 1 trial tests safety and immune response in small groups, so it does not show whether the vaccine protects people against flu.
