Eyewitness says Stellenbosch student tried to burn door
An unnamed student says he saw the 19-year-old accused trying to slide burning paper under a victim's door at an off-campus residence last weekend. The accused faces charges of attempted murder and arson and remains in custody.
The eyewitness asked not to be named. He said he smelt something burning and went out to look. He said the accused was outside the room that was later set alight.
The eyewitness said the victim cried for help. He and a housemate kicked the door down to get the victim out.
The accused appeared in court earlier this week and remains in custody. Stellenbosch University said it will cooperate with the authorities.
