French study shows hepatitis C falling among people who use drugs
A study in Nature Communications tracked hepatitis C among people who use drugs in France from 2004 to 2023. The authors report a substantial fall in both new infections and overall prevalence between 2013 and 2023.
The authors link the fall to widespread treatment and harm reduction, and say France is moving closer to the World Health Organization's 2030 elimination targets. People who use drugs are often left out of such programmes. The study is peer-reviewed, but the details available here are limited to its abstract. The link between the decline and treatment is the authors' own interpretation, and the sample sizes are not stated.
