HIV escaped a preventive antibody in 8 of 26 recipients
A South African and US team studied how HIV changed in people who caught it despite receiving the antibody VRC01 in a prevention trial. The study appears in Nature Microbiology.
The team, which includes Professor Penny Moore of Wits University and Professor Carolyn Williamson of the University of Cape Town, analysed 11,730 HIV sequences from 47 trial participants. New escape mutations appeared in eight of 26 VRC01 recipients, and in none of 21 placebo recipients. Newer antibodies, including N6 and 1–18, largely stayed effective against the escaped viruses. The researchers say most of the mutations are rare worldwide, but whether they cost the virus fitness is not yet proven.
