HPV infections in South African girls fall 83% after school vaccination
Public health researchers who ran the HOPE study report that infections with HPV types 16 and 18 fell by 83% among South African girls eligible for the school vaccine. They describe their findings in an explainer they wrote themselves.
The team compared 17 and 18-year-old girls too old for the 2014 programme with girls who were eligible for it. The study used 2,357 participants from public healthcare facilities in four provinces, and about one-quarter lived with HIV. In that group, infections fell from 29% to 4%. The researchers say it is too early to measure cervical cancer rates, so the study is observational and shows only infections. The page does not name a journal.
