IFP's Mabaso says smart billing will fix Johannesburg finances
Mlungisi Mabaso, the IFP's mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, said in a radio interview that the party would raise city revenue, tackle corruption and launch an economic recovery plan. He admitted the party has not costed its smart billing plan.
Mabaso spoke to presenter John Perlman on 702. He said Johannesburg has a huge revenue base and economic assets. He also said many accounts in the city are not billed, and that the city is losing big business.
Mabaso said officials in the system corrupt it by working with businesses and customers who do not want to pay municipalities. He pointed to disconnected customers who get reconnected without paying. He said: "we've got elements of corruption that we are going to deal with in the system".
Mabaso said the IFP can easily roll out a smart billing and digital account system once it is in government. Asked whether the party had costed it, he said: "Yeah, well, we have not costed that. Remember, we are not in government as we speak."
