Mashatile to visit Bronkhorstspruit after water illness outbreak
Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expected to meet residents in hospital after more than 400 cases of gastrointestinal illness were reported in Bronkhorstspruit. The illness is linked to contaminated water from the town's water treatment plant.
It is understood that the City of Tshwane did not chlorinate the water at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant. Unnamed sources gave this cause, and some people accuse the city of negligence.
Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya told Parliament that the plant manager is suspended. She said the investigation continues because it is a whole value chain and something in the communication broke.
The city is again under fire over unclean drinking water, for the second time in three years. About two dozen people died in Hammanskraal in 2023 after they consumed contaminated water supplied by the city.
