MPs question Tshwane over Bronkhorstspruit water illness
Parliament's Health Portfolio Committee heard that 595 people fell ill after drinking unchlorinated water from the Bronkhorstspruit treatment plant. Political parties criticised Mayor Nasiphi Moya and the metro for not acting swiftly.
Committee members asked the Tshwane Metro whether the crisis was under control. Moya told them the plant manager was suspended and the matter was under control. The Department of Health said 44% of the cases were children under the age of four.
Stephen Moore, the Democratic Alliance spokesperson on water and sanitation, said Moya's administration was negligent. He told the committee: "Mayor Moya must take responsibility and resign."
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo said a case would be opened against the metro.
