New dicynodont species from Tanzania links Africa and South America
A team led by the University of Bristol has described Dinodontosaurus isiyavamanda, a plant-eating animal about 240 million years old, from Tanzania. The genus was known only from South America before.
Hady George, a PhD student at Bristol, led the study, which appears in the peer-reviewed Journal of Vertebrate Palaeontology. The team used fossils from a 1963 British expedition that were kept at the Natural History Museum, London. They say the link suggests the Tanzanian rocks are younger than thought, so the oldest possible dinosaur fossils there may be younger too. Much of the Tanzanian material is still unstudied, so the picture may change.
