New hydrogel releases pesticide to boost rice tillering and curb weeds
Researchers have made a hydrogel from manganese and carboxymethyl chitosan that releases a strigolactone inhibitor when the pH changes. The peer-reviewed study appears in Nature Communications.
According to the paper's abstract, the hydrogel promotes tillering in rice and suppresses the germination of root-parasitic weeds. Striga is one such weed, and it threatens maize and other crops in southern Africa. The study is on rice, and only a summary was available, so field results and scale are unknown. It appears to be early-stage work.
