Record crowd runs in purple Speedos at Zoo Lake
Organisers of the Hollard Dare Devil Run estimated just over 4,000 people attended at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg on Friday. It was the biggest turnout in the event's 17 years, and the run raises awareness of testicular and prostate cancer.
Hollard South Africa said more than 351 runs were held across the country. The race distance is 5km, and participants wore purple Speedos.
Adele Kriel, head of experiential marketing at Hollard South Africa, said the unusual dress code aims to get people talking about men's health. She said men do not easily talk about their health. The aim is to make them comfortable discussing testicular and prostate cancer.
Kaih Mokoka joined the run to honour his mother. Kriel said the turnout shows that every year people want to make a difference and bring friends and colleagues with them.
