San trackers help identify fossil lion tracks on Cape coast

Researchers at Nelson Mandela University worked with Ju/'hoansi San master trackers from Namibia to identify fossil lion tracks at three southern Cape coast sites. The findings appear in a peer-reviewed paper in the South African Journal of Science.
Charles Helm, Clive Thompson and Jan Carlo De Vynck write that trackers #oma Daqm and /uce Nǂamce confirmed one known site and identified two others. At two sites they read tracks of both a male and a female lion. The authors say these are the only reported fossil lion tracksites in southern Africa. Only one site has been dated, to about 70,000 years ago, and the authors say they cannot tell Cape lion tracks from those of other subspecies.
