Soweto teacher appears in court on child rape charge
Kabelo Temba, 59, is accused of raping a nine-year-old pupil in the school toilets at Busisiwe Primary School in Zola. The case was postponed to 29 October for a formal bail application, which the state will oppose.
Temba appeared in the Protea magistrate's court on Thursday. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the alleged rape happened on 6 October. He said the child told her mother the same day.
The matter was reported to police on 10 October. Temba handed himself over to police on 21 October.
Mohlatlole said the state will oppose bail because of the seriousness of the offence and because it involves a minor. The Gauteng department of education placed Temba on precautionary suspension. It also started psychological support for the pupil.
