Study links Brazil's presidents to shifts in habitat loss
A University of Cambridge-led study used satellite maps from 1990 to 2025 to track native vegetation loss in Brazil across seven presidencies. It found Amazon loss fell under President Lula's current term compared with Bolsonaro's, while Cerrado loss rose.
The team used MapBiomas land-cover maps to follow the Amazon, the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest. They link the changing pattern of loss to environmental policy. The study is published in Environmental Research Communications, a peer-reviewed journal. One caveat: the figures for Lula's current term cover only its first three years, so they are early.
