Study links protein THBS1 to scarring and inflammation in belly fat
Researchers studied single nuclei from human visceral fat to see what drives fibro-inflammatory changes linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. They report that the protein THBS1 promotes fibrosis and inflammation. The peer-reviewed paper appears in Nature Communications.
The authors say THBS1 acts through the activation of TGFβ in macrophages, a type of immune cell. This points to a possible molecular driver of the scarring and inflammation in belly fat that comes with obesity and diabetes. The work is mechanistic and early, and it does not show that THBS1 is a treatment target in people.
