Study of 194-year-old tortoise finds 287 ageing-linked gene variants
Researchers at the longevity non-profit Kallel, with a University of Cambridge co-author, studied the genome and epigenome of Jonathan, an Aldabra giant tortoise on St Helena. The study appears in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.
The team reports 287 gene variants linked to reduced effects of ageing, including DNA repair and cancer suppression. They also found that Jonathan's gene regulation stayed stable compared with younger tortoises. Jonathan's age of 194 years is an estimate, and the study looked at one animal only. The findings are early and not yet linked to human treatments.
