Wits expert warns warming could spread mosquito diseases in Africa
Professor Helen Rees, a public health expert at Wits University, warned that climate change is widening the range of disease-carrying mosquitoes in Africa. She spoke at the African Academy of Sciences Presidential Lecture Series on climate change and health.
Rees said mosquitoes are moving to higher latitudes and altitudes, and transmission seasons are getting longer in some regions. She pointed to Anopheles stephensi, a malaria mosquito that breeds in water storage containers and is spreading into African cities. She also said Aedes mosquitoes, which carry dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika, are likely to expand. This is an expert warning from a lecture, not a new study with new data.
