Wits team engineers nanoparticles to carry Alzheimer's medicine to brain cells
Researchers at the Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform are engineering tiny fat-based particles called liposomes. They aim to help brain cells take up galantamine, a medicine for Alzheimer's symptoms.
Professor Pradeep Kumar, a senior researcher at the platform, presented the work at the 2026 Southern African Neuroscience Society Symposium. He said the team is engineering the vehicle that carries the medicine, not only the medicine itself. The team also studies levodopa delivery for Parkinson's disease. This is an institutional news feature, not a peer-reviewed paper. Wits says much of the work is at an early stage and can take many years to reach patients.
