The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says the approved applications are a 131 per cent increase on the 2021 municipal elections. Special voting runs for two days, on Monday and Tuesday, before election day on Wednesday 4 November.

The IEC is set to brief the media on its state of readiness for the two-day special voting period. The approved applications cover the whole country.

Democrats won back both the US House and Senate in the midterm elections held on 3 November, according to media projections. Exit polls showed voters were angry about high prices and the direction of the country, and rebuked President Donald Trump.
