Iran executes 3 men over January protest unrest
Iran hanged Hassan Dioband, Hamid Kazemi and Reza Zanganeh on Sunday after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences, state media said. The judiciary accused them of working for Israel and the US and of armed attacks in Karaj.
The judiciary said the men used firearms, grenades and Molotov cocktails. It said they set fire to public facilities and damaged an electricity substation in Karaj, which caused power outages.
The judiciary said Dioband was arrested on 11 January after investigators identified him as a suspect in attacks on public property and incitement to violence. It said 10 others were arrested for taking part in the unrest under his supervision. Other defendants received prison terms of 5 to 10 years.
Reports said Iranian forces killed thousands of protesters in a crackdown on the January protests.
