IEC announces official local election results in Midrand
Ongoing: Elections Hot
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is declaring the official results of the 4 November local government elections on Sunday. Vote counting had reached 99%, and five metros had no outright winner in seats won.
Only the City of Cape Town had a majority, and the DA kept control of the city. Reports said the IEC streamed the announcement live from its results centre.
The IEC was due to address the nation at 6pm. It planned to declare the elections free and fair and to outline each party's proportional representation seats in municipal councils.
Party leaders and officials arrived at the centre ahead of the announcement. As of 3pm on Saturday, the IEC had received 197 objections. It dismissed 54, eight were withdrawn and two were upheld.
